Weghorst set for derby debut as United's summer plans suffer setback

The latest name confirmed to be headed in the route of Old Trafford in recent days is Wout Weghorst.

Wout Weghorst and Erik Ten Hag

According to Fabrizio Romano, Netherlands international, Wout Weghorst, is well on his way to become a Manchester United player after it was revealed that the negotiations for his loan had been completed and all parties had agreed.

The deal will reportedly see Manchester United pay €3million directly to Besiktas as compensation for his loan recall, instead of his parent club, Burnley.

Weghorst, 30, will now become United's replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo after the Red Devils were left short-staffed when Cristiano was released following his calamitous interview last year.

And while not many United fans are excited about the loan deal, Erik Ten Hag seems to be a fan of the player. It was reported that United made first contact for the player in mid-December, so it wasn't a panic buy as we've seen from the club in recent years.

Besiktas was skeptical to release the big striker for his dream Manchester United loan move because they was no recall clause in the agreement they had with Burnley.

But with United paying €3million for the impromptu recall and the availability of a replacement (most likely Vincent Aboubakar), they've now agreed to the deal.

Wout Weghorst himself has been said to be keen and excited on the deal, and some reports have even stated that he was willing to complete the payment required by Besiktas from his own personal purse.

He has now arrived Manchester and could  complete his medical as well as sign the papers in time for Manchester United's clash with Manchester City on Saturday, 14th January 2023.

Manchester United's Summer Plans Suffer Setback

The Telegraph writer, James Ducker, has released reports that Manchester United's plans for the coming summer transfer might be hampered if they don't qualify for Champions League football or sell enough players.
This is coming after United's Director of Football, John Murtough, said that they were facing some kind of "price hike/tax" whenever United bid for players.

According to Murtough, this was one of the reasons why United were making expensive signings like Antony and their consequent overspending on transfers.

But it seems that it will now come back to haunt them even after the Glazers have sold the club. James Ducker reported that UEFA Financial Sustainability rules and the £300 million debt owed by Manchester United will ensure that United's purse for the summer window will be limited even with new owners.

There have also been reports that Ten Hag might need to choose between a striker or a midfielder in the summer because of the club's limited finances. This hasn't bode well with the fanbase but with the Glazers going out, it could be a start of a new frugal cost-efficient Manchester United team.
