Ruben Amorim Plans Summer Clear-Out at Manchester United, Set to Offload Fourth Player

Ruben Amorim is reportedly open to offloading another player in the summer transfer window.

Amorim and United need a squad refresh

Following the loan departures of Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia during the January transfer window, three of whom are expected to be sold on a permanent basis.

According to reports from The Sun, Amorim has also decided to sell shotstopper Andre Onana, who joined the club in 2023 after an impressive season with Inter Milan that saw them reach the Champions League final.

Despite arriving at Old Trafford with a reputation as one of the world's best ball-playing goalkeepers, the Cameroon international has struggled to maintain consistency in England and has faced considerable criticism for his performances.

André Onana hasn't been consistent at United

The decision to sell Onana comes amid reported interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, and Amorim could be ready to sanction his departure should a suitable offer materialise.

Doubts surrounding Onana's future have been further fuelled by public comments from figures within and around the club—such as club co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who identified Onana as one of the players at the club who is ‘overpaid’; as well as former striker Louis Saha, who described Onana’s performances as ‘not acceptable’ earlier in the season when assessing his future.

Onana’s costly mistakes have been a factor with the doubts

The Frenchman, Saha, emphasised the need for every player—except Bruno Fernandes—to feel the pressure of competition, stating that no one has been consistent enough to deserve a guaranteed place in the team.

He stressed, “The backbone of this team—from the back four to the centre forwards—it’s so important that they don’t make mistakes. Unless you can guarantee that you’re not going to make mistakes, you should not be a guaranteed starter in any position. None of those players should be assured of anything.”

As the club looks towards a potential replacement for Onana, Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, and Burnley’s James Trafford have reportedly emerged as potential targets.

Interestingly, two of the three targets have also been linked with Manchester City, who are reportedly considering options for life after Ederson following the Brazilian’s own struggles this season.

Reports such as this about the expectations of United's summer business aptly the challenging situation at Manchester United, who are currently languishing in 13th place in the Premier League.
