French Star Set for Pay Cut as United Stall in Contract Talks

Manchester United are embroiled in some difficult contract extension negotiations with their French World Cup winner

Varane is set for either a wage cut or an exit out of United

As reported earlier during the week, United are in talks over the signing of a new deal for French defender, Raphael Varane, but as it stands, the English giants have decided against triggering the option to extend his current contract for an extra year; although they maintain that they want to keep the player.

Varane, 30, is currently on a contract that sees him earn £340,000-a-week, but that figure is due to reduce if the veteran defender wants to stay at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane has suffered his fair share of injuries throughout his time at United

According to reports, Manchester United do not think that it is justifiable that they hand out over £300,000 every week to a player whose availability will regularly have question marks due to injury. And as such, Varane has found himself in a situation similar to that of David De Gea last season.

The Daily Mail reports that United are on a mission to negotiate new contracts with a lot of their players, with the aim of fairly auditing their salaries to fit the planned healthy wage bill they need for an overhaul.

Erik ten Haag and Varane have had a few reported issues

Varane, on his part, fended off interest last summer by declaring that he was interested in remaining at United; but that stance could have taken a different turn, especially with news of his fallout from the first team and with manager, Erik ten Haag.

He has also be touted with a move to Saudi Arabia last summer and most recently, during John Murtough’s trip to the Middle East.

So while the Red Devils will be eager to trigger the extra year options in the contracts of the likes of Lindelof and Hannibal, whilst negotiating new contracts with them; they would be looking for alternative options for the likes of Martial and Varane.

Should the French defender leave Manchester United?
